October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is internationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month - and for good reason. Breast cancer affects women of every country of the world, and according to the World Health Organization it is the world’s most prevalent cancer. To emphasize the magnitude of this cancer: Throughout 12 month period that composed the year 2020, there were 2.3 million women in the United States alone who were newly diagnosed with Breast Cancer.
Quick 12's focus is to support the health of all professional caregivers, however our roots are deeply seeded within the nursing profession. Nursing has historically been a female-dominated profession. Using the nursing profession to further emphasize the prevalence of breast cancer, let's bring the breast cancer statistics a little closer to home:
In the United States, it is estimated that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer within their lifetime. Meaning that if you work on a floor with 7 other nurses, there is a very real chance that either you or one of your colleagues could be diagnosed with Breast Cancer at some point in your lifetime. Scary, right?
Thankfully, there are organizations, like Susan G. Komen, that started from a sister's promise to do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. The Susan G Komen organization has been supporting individuals and families affected by Breast Cancer since its formation in 1982. This incredible organization has so far generated and invested over 3.3 BILLION dollars to breast cancer support, treatment, and research which has significantly helped to reduce the risk of death from breast cancer by 40%.
